A male horse or pony is called a Stallion and a female is called a Mare. A baby pony is called a foal.
We have two ponies here at the farm, they are called Coco (right) and Fairy.
Ponies and Horse are herbivores and our ponies are on very strict diets, which is why we ask that you do not feed them the animal food. We control their diets to maintain good weight and prevent health issues such as laminitis.
Fresh, long grass is actually very high in sugar which is why we limit how much they eat. They get a large quantity of hay in the paddock at night alongside a concentrated feed with added supplements, such as turmeric and garlic. The Pony feed is one of the largest expenses in the barn, it costs a lot to keep our two ladies happy!
Fairy was born in 1999 and has been at the farm since 2013. She is a Welsh Section A pony and her colour is technically classified as grey even though her coat colour is white! She is known to have a stubborn personality but is still much loved by volunteers.
Coco has been at the farm since March 2022. She might look big but she is still classified as a Pony. A horse has to be 14.2 hands tall and Coco is just a little bit smaller than this. She was also born in 1999. She is a Welsh Cob section D pony and colouring is defined as Skewbold. She also has blue eyes which is known as Glass Eye. The furry parts at the bottom of Coco's legs are called feathers.
Just like humans, ponies need to look after themselves. Each year the equine dentist visits to file down their teeth. If this isn't done their teeth can become over grown and cause them pain while eating.
Roughly every 12 weeks a farrier comes to see them both to trim their hooves, to ensure they can walk without pain of discomfort. I like to think this is the pony equivalent of going to get your nails done but i doubt it!
