Cows

A female cow is called a cow and a male cow is called a bull. A baby cow is called a calf.

A cow that hasn't had a calf before is called a heifer.

What type of cow?

Star and Solar are Dexter Cows. Dexter cows are a smaller than your average dairy cow, which makes them perfect for a small hold like ours. Dexters are also a dual bread, meaning that they can be used for milking and for meat.

What do cows eat?

Cows are herbivores, this means that they eat mainly grasses and hay. They eat 2% of their body weight a day!

They are also ruminants which means that they have a 4 chambered stomach. These stomachs contain a lot of benefitable micro-organisms which are needed for formation to break down the plant matter that they eat.

Meet Star

Star was born on the farm in early 2019. Her brown colouring is called Dunn.

During the day Solar and Star hang out in the paddocks alongside the sheep and goats. They all get along pretty well, until someone comes along with some food that is.

Meet Solar

Solar is a black cow and was born on New year's day in 2017.

We have trained both Star and Solar to pick up their feet, making it a lot easier if we need to check them!
