Interested in becoming a café volunteer?

Reports to: Café Manager

Time Commitment: Flexible - ideally a regular weekly shift (minimum 4 hours)

Training Provided: Yes (food hygiene, allergens awareness, customer service, trauma-informed practice

Purpose of the role

 As a Café Volunteer, you help create a warm, welcoming and inclusive space for everyone who visits Stonebridge City Farm & Gardens. You'll support the team by preparing food and drinks, serving customers and helping maintain a clean and friendly environment. The café isn't just a place to eat - it's a social lifeline for many and your role helps foster community, dignity and belonging

Key Responsibilities

  • Greet customers with kindness and patience, taking orders clearly and confidently
  • Prepare and serve food and drinks, following hygiene and allergy procedures
  • Use the till or take cash payments, ensuring accuracy and friendliness
  • Clear and clean café tables and keep fridges stocked up and looking presentable for customers
  • Wash dishes and keep the kitchen area clean and safe 
  • Help maintain the hygiene of the kitchen
  • Support stock rotation (e.g. labelling, checking dates)
  • Promote daily specials, farm produce and donation options
  • Offer reassurance or guidance to customers who may need extra time or support (e.g. those with disabilities, carers or anxious visitors)
  • Work as part of a team, communicating any concerns or questions to café staff
  • Follow food safety and allergen protocols at all times

Ideal Qualities

  • Friendly, reliable and calm under pressure
  • Willing to learn and follow instructions (especially around food safety)
  • Enjoys working with people and as part of a diverse team with varying abilities
  • Communicate with empathy, respect and inclusivitiy
  • Open to inclusive and trauma-aware communication
  • Basic numeracy and hygiene awareness

Additional Information

We welcome volunteers over the ages of 16 with all abilities. Café roles can be adapted to suit your needs. For example, if you're more confident behind the scenes, you might support washing up or food preparation. If you enjoy talking to people, working on the till might suit you better. You will never be asked to do anything alone without proper training or support.
